U16 Match Report

Achill welcomed Louisburgh to a windswept Davitt Park this evening for their latest game of the 2018 league. The lads in green and white were hoping to register a home win, following a defeat away to Tourmakeady last week. Knowledge and experience of the Achill climate proved valuable, as the Achill lads showed they were in no way hindered by the extremely strong wind that had a huge influence on the flow of the game - not a midge to be seen this side of Castlebar!

The game was barely a minute old when Colin Grealis opened Achill's account, kicking a fine point. This was followed minutes later by a goal from his first cousin Eugene Doran. These two scores proved to be the opening of the scoring floodgates for Achill. Goals and points from Seán Lively McNamara, Finnian McGurk, Colin Grealis and Ciarán Cafferkey - who ended up with a hat-trick plus one for the evening - as well as points from Eóin Murphy, Michael Lavelle and Colin Grealis meant that Achill went in at the short whistle in an extremely comfortable position. Louisburgh had to be content with just a point for the half. Cian McCarthy, adjusting to his new positioning between the sticks, had very little to do during the course of the half, but answered any questions asked of him by Louisburgh.

Conor Ginnelly took over between the posts for in the second half as the first half goalkeeper moved out the field. It took almost ten minutes for the first flag of the second half to be raised. The colour was white, as Seán Lively McNamara kicked over the bar. Cian Gallagher was keen to get in on the scoring act, and netted two, the first of which will probably go down as the score of the game. Ignoring the spectators' encouragement to kick the ball over the bar, he skillfully and stylishly slotted the ball to the net, to gasps of admiration from the occupants of the stand. The only one who didn't seem in any way amazed by such a skilful execution was the linesman!!!!
Louisburgh enjoyed a couple of short purple patches during the last twenty minutes. On both occasions they scored two goals in two minutes to add to their first half tally. The woodwork and good defensive work from John McGinty, Ciarán Callaghan and JP Lavelle ensured that Louisburgh were denied further scores. Ryan Wilson also contributed a goal for the green and white this evening. It was Louisburgh who had the last score of the game, kicking over a point practically on the final whistle.
Having done so much in the first half, there was only ever going to be one winner at Davitt Park this evening. Achill took the spoils against, what it must be said, was a gallant Louisburgh side, which displayed an extremely strong never-say-die ethic in what was for them, an uphill battle practically all the way.
Well done to our own lads also. Nár laga Dia sibh!
