The opening of the new facilities took place on May 4th 2002.
The day was blessed with wins for all teams involved. In the first game McHale College defeated St. Brendan's, Belmullet to clinch the Mayo Vocational Schools title a much fought after honour. In the second game of the day Achill had a comfortable win over Kilmeena in a challenge game. The official opening of the pitch took place before the Senior game, Mayo v Dublin. Fr. Paddy Gilligan blessed the new facilities and John Cooney of Achill Sound performed the official opening. The senior game was keenly contested, with Mayo winning in the end by a single point. Final score Mayo 1-11 Dublin 1-10
